Abstract

The potential value of pump-probe spectroscopy for the study of the spectral profiles of narrow gas-phase absorption lines has been investigated using the technique of concentration-modulated absorption spectroscopy (COMAS). The relationship of the probe laser 'gain' to the absorption line profile is established and the parameters of the Voigt line profile for the 3p2P12 /-3s2S12 / transition of atomic sodium in a hydrocarbon flame have been determined. The effects of a significant reduction in the Doppler contribution to the linewidth of this transition in the flame are clearly identified.
