Abstract
The S 1 lifetime τ 1 of dissolved stilbene has been measured in the concentration range from 5 × 10 -2 mol/ℓ to 2 × 10 -1 mol/ℓ using a probe beam method. The time dependence of the population of the S 1 level excited by two-photon absorption has been observed by single-photon absorption S 1 → S x . A linear dependence of the reciprocal lifetime on stilbene concentration c A has been found: 1/τ 1 = 6 × 10 7 s -1 + 6.7 × 10 9 s -1 ℓ mol -1 c A.
