Abstract

The concentration dependence of IR luminescence quantum yield in the 2 μm region of Ho 3+ doped GdOCl has been measured for different excitation wavelengths. As distinct from the 1.5 μm erbium luminescence the maximum of the holmium luminescence quantum yield is observed for a Ho 3+ smaller concentration than the corresponding erbium concentration. The highest value of the absolute quantum yield reaches 3 for UV excitation. The peculiarities of the concentration dependence of the holmium IR luminescence quantum yield are due to cross-relaxation processes between Ho 3+ ions that cause both summation and manifolding of the electronic IR excitations.
