Abstract

The hyperfiltration rejection of an electrolyte by a membrane containing a significant fixed charge concentration is a strong function of the ionic strenght, making the hyperfiltration system rejection of an electrolyte dependent upon feed concentration as well as recovery. An approximate method for relating the system rejection to zero-recovery hyperfiltration parameters, applicable over a broad range of concentrations and recoveries, is described and applied to a commercial high recovery hyperfiltration system. Although concentration polarization and velocity effects are not included in this simplified model, it appears to be useful in both the design and performance analysis of high recovery hyperfiltration systems containing ion exchange membranes.
