Abstract

Metastable solid solutions of Cu and Fe in Gd with up to ∼ 15 at. % solute were prepared by ultrarapid quenching from the liquid (splat cooling). These solid solutions are of a new type: a ratio of two solute atoms for one replaced solvent atom was found. This suggests that the solute forms di-substitutionals, S 2 (split interstitials). Conditions for simple interstitial and di-substitutional solid solution formation are discussed.
