Abstract

This paper investigates the development of a concave lens integration concept in a conical horn antenna, and its considerate use in the Received Signal Strength (RSS) enhancement of outdoor based (60 GHz) mm mesh networks. A conical horn antenna is developed in High Frequency Structural Simulator (HFSS) with a gain of 12 dB and Half Power Beam Width (HPBW) of 10° to model the RSS in a street. Ray tracing based model shows that there are only limited paths which are significant for a highly directional link under consideration. The results obtained are modeled in matlab software. Further, when a concave lens is integrated into the same horn antenna an increase of 5 dB in gain is obtained there by increasing the efficiency. With the incorporation of concave lens, gain has increased resulting in a better RSS of mm wave links at similar transmitted power. An analogous street model is developed in Wireless Insite (WI) with similar concave lens antenna dimensions, gain and transmitted power. The simulated result also shows an increment in RSS whose values are comparable with modeled matlab values. The analysis of this approach can be an alternative to the concept of multiple antenna technique and also the energy efficient antenna for WPAN applications.
