Abstract
The present study focuses on the fish communities observed at artificial reefs built off Itapipoca, Fortaleza and Beberibe counties, in Ceara State, from 1995 to 2000. The sampling was performed by monitoring commercial catches at the reef locations and by visual assessments carried out by divers. From the abundance data distributed over two-month periods, the indices of species diversity (H’), equitability (J’) and species richness (S) were calculated. A total of 40 species belonging to 19 families were identified. There was a significant difference in the species diversity between the newer reefs of Fortaleza county and the older reefs of Beberibe county. The equitability index ranged from 85% to 92%. The number of species found on Itapipoca, Fortaleza and Beberibe reefs were 38, 33 and 37, respectively.
