Abstract

We present a rigorous approach to simulating air bearings in disk drives in the presence of humidity. The approach presented here involves a modification of the Reynolds equation and is fundamentally different from that reported in the literature so far. The current method takes into consideration the condensation of water vapor due to super saturation and subsequent drying of the air as it reaches the trailing end. This approach provides better agreement with experimental data than the previous methods. Results based on drive level tests are presented for air bearing at various temperatures.
