Abstract

A personal reprint file is an exceptionally important asset in consultation, teaching, and research. The collection tends to become chaotic and unmanageable with time, as its value increases. Locating articles may be difficult. Filing is complicated because scientific papers often have several areas of interest and indexing is needed to facilitate retrieval. Managing a manual index is time- consuming and limits search options. The microcomputer is a potent tool for cataloguing. We have developed an index of our reprints and reference files using a simple, small, menu-driven, commercial, flat-file database program. To find a reprint or assemble a bibliography, a search may be done by single or combinations of subject, key word in title, author, journal, or date of publication. Rather than filing the documents by subject, reprints are consecutively numbered, which has simplified filing, retrieval, and inventory for missing papers.
