Abstract

A new method has been developed to computerize field evaporation microscopy (FEM). Individual field evaporation images produced on the imaging atom probe detector are scanned by a MOS camera either in synchronization with the field evaporation pulse or at selected intervals during continuous field evaporation. The signal intensity of this photodiode array is read into a video buffer in an intelligent CAMAC module. The contents of this video buffer may then be transferred into main computer memory and stored on disk for further image processing. The individual images may be produced from either a separate output on the video buffer or from the data in computer memory. Animated serial sections and three-dimensional renderings may be produced from the data in computer memory. This method may also be used to reconstruct features from sequences of field ion images.
