Abstract
China is the world’s biggest market for English learning. The large population of English learners in China naturally leads to the largest number of English essays, which brings heavy burden on English teachers or teach assistants. To addresse the issue, this article introduces an online automatic essay scoring (AES) system, i.e. Pigai, specifically designed for learners in China. Based on the cloud computing and advanced intelligence, it provides an efficient way of improving the communication between students and teachers, so as to overcome the most salient obstacles encountered in the English education such as the high cost, demanding resources and delayed feedback.It is the first-of-its-kind commercial product that has been widely used in over 1000 Chinese education facilities, including some top universities such as Tsinghua University. Via an empirical study conducted in Nantong University, we confirmed the positive impact of our system on the English writing level of involved subjects. Moreover, statistical analysis as well as interviews with subjects are performed to obtain critical experiences and insights for the future research.
