Abstract

Litzenberg's paper summarizes the discussions of the past three decades about using computers in the classroom. The paper also contains timely comments about the effects of microcomputers in the classroom. The benefits which can be gained by using computers in the classroom are generally recognized by the teaching profession. The results of a recent survey of the faculty in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech indicate that 72% of the faculty believe that the use of interactive computers would benefit their classes, but only 40% require their students to use a computer in at least one course per year. Why, then, is our profession still in the discussion stage about computers? Professionally, we claim to recognize the benefits which can be gained by using computers in our courses, but we have been slow to capitalize on these benefits.
