Abstract
The results of field tests of two tutorials (BALANCE and CALCULATE) and two simulations (TEMPE and YOGURT) are reported. It is concluded that simple-structured, computer-controlled tutorials can be used effectively to support the teaching of basic process engineering skills, such as the skill to calculate mass and energy balances and the skill to estimate the order of magnitude of variables. Also, student-controlled simulations are effective when used to support the teaching of higher order process engineering skills, such as the scientific approach to problem solving, system analyses and predictive modelling.
