Abstract

The St. Louis Metropolitan Transit Authority, as part of a systematic program to improve maintenance on its buses, is attempting to have operators drive the same vehicle each day. A simulation model was developed for testing the feasibility of the system and testing heuristic rules for parking buses to prevent blockages at scheduled departure times. A mathematical programming procedure is used for assigning buses to runs. An interactive computer system supports parking and dispatching. This article describes the three tools and relates experience with their use.
