Abstract

Most computer models of acoustic instruments have been designed for exact timbral approximation, rather than applicability to real performance situations. However, the subtle nuances that good players instinctively provide in the dommains of pitch, timbre, rhythm, and dynamics are absolutely essential to “musical” performances. A recording of portions of an original string trio will be played, as performed by an IBM 370 series computer, using a set of rules for “espressivo” playing and a synthesis algorithm designed for precise control of multiple performance variables.
