Abstract

Two exercises illustrating the application of the quantitative techniques of physics to the understanding of biological processes have been developed and tested with undergraduate physiology classes. The first exercise emphasises the utility of mathematical simulations which represent graphically the responses exhibited by physiological systems and the second exercise provides an example of the use of physical theory (in this case, the first law of thermodynamics) to model some aspect of the behavior of a complex physiological system.
