Abstract

In order to optimize the design of core boxes and to improve the quality of cores, it is necessary to understand the behavior of sand particles in core shooting process. For this purpose, a two fluid model bas been developed. Both the fluid phase, air, and the particulate phase, sand granules, have been treated as continuum. By using this model, the flow behavior and compaction of sand particles during the core shooting process have been simulated. To do benchmark test for the calculated results, the core shooting process has been studied with a digital high speed camera and the motion of sand stream in the core boxes with different geometry has been recorded. The simulation results are in agreement with the experimental ones.
