Abstract

Through the use of PASS IV and a heuristic programming technique, a computer simula-tion and optimal scheduling has been developed for a soaking pit-slabbing mill system. The simulation and optimization were carried out for the East Chicago Plant of the Youngs-town Sheet and Tube Company. The system considered included the pouring of heats, the stripping of molds, soaking pit operation, the slabbing mill, and hand conditioning of the semifinished slabs. Through the simulation and optimization developed, it was possible to identify the possible production bottlenecks and to assess the projected capital investment programs, along with determining the optimal operational decision rules. The basic ideas presented here should have a broad applicability to the modelling and optimization of other complex steel processing systems.
