Abstract

The approach to homework used in elementary school and high school is also popular in college computer courses, particularly those involving programming. Regardless of its popularity, there are compelling reasons to eschew this approach at the college level. This paper outlines the major problems inherent in the high school approach, and proposes an alternative. The proposed model provides opportunities for learning and maturation, while preventing further erosion of the meaning of an academic grade.
