Abstract

The friction between flexible magnetic tape and a rotating drum causes many problems in a VTR. The tape floating phenomenon and the frictional phenomenon between the magnetic tape and the rotating drum with a groove or with a magnetic head were measured on the parallel-loaded foil bearing and on the helical scan VTR. New structure/fluid coupled analysis considering contact friction and air viscous friction between the tape and the drums was developed. The tape floating phenomena on the grooved drum and on the head mounting window were calculated by the averaged thickness method. We compared the experimental results and the calcurated results. Good agreement between the calculation and the measurement was obtained. The Stribeck curve was also obtained by calculation. The friction force dependence on head protrusion was analyzed into the factors.
