Abstract

The empirical study shows that there exist certain key areas of which we need to be aware in discussing the development of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) and Computer Integrated Enterprise (CIE) from a humancentered perspective:o phenomena related to the underlying 'concept of simplification' in the development of a strategy for CIM, which has a crucial impact on the work of both blue- and white-collar workers:o structural arrangements for technical and organizational integration are necessary preconditions for achieving integrated work. These opportunities can only be realized through a process in which the goal is to create a system of joint work.o system development: this is a main area for the human-centered design of CIM systems. The purpose of this critical analysis of the current stage of development of computer integrated systems is to investigate the issue of whether work in computer integrated companies may be considered conducive to the human development of both blue- and white-collar workers. The study shows that the potential opportunities provided by the integration that is currently taking place have been exploited to only a very limited extent.
