Abstract

Factory automation and integrated manufacturing have become very important subjects in today’s competitive marketplace. Integrating all the departmental information within the plant along with the process automation and control systems has proven to be a complex and difficult problem even with all the networking tools available today. However, even with this difficulty, many tire manufacturing companies have determined that to maintain a healthy competitive posture they must integrate their manufacturing processes. This goal becomes even more difficult when a detailed plan is not developed in the beginning which establishes the objectives of the entire implementation program. This plan must incorporate the changes required not only in the equipment within the plant, but also the operation changes and their corresponding requirements of the plant personnel. This paper addresses a six step approach which can be used to develop an implementation plan for an integrated manufacturing facility.
