Computer‐Based Training Project in the British Steel Corporation: Basic Mathematics in Industry

Abstract

Abstract The project was initially discussed, early in 1983, with the Manpower Services Commission's Training Technology Section, with the intention of providing a computer‐based training package in basic mathematics for Youth Training Scheme trainees. The proposal to the MSC resulted in their support for the in‐house development of an authoring system to be used on the Acom BBC microcomputer, the provision of 14 sets of equipment and the retention of the specialist manpower required to produce a course in basic mathematics. The project was led by British Steel Corporation's Central Training Unit with a team consisting of a training adviser, computer programming specialist and four training officers drawn from participating works in South Yorkshire and Humberside. It broke new ground in the British Steel Corporation as the first attempt to use an inexpensive microcomputer to present general training material to an unsophisticated audience.
