Abstract
The volume of information accumulated on the viruses pathogenic for insects is no longer manageable in a conventional cross-indexed card format. FAMULUS, a computer program developed by Burton et al. (1969) and consisting of eight subsystems, is used to generate a rigorously structured worldwide catalog of viral diseases of insects, of host species, genera, and families, and of subject matters. The uniqueness of the insect virus catalog is the result of a highly specialized literature coverage coupled with a thorough analysis of the information content of each publication. A descriptive outline of the computer-aided information system is published with the hope of stimulating those specialists working in other areas of invertebrate pathology to undertake similar endeavors.
