His research interests include computational systems biology and cancer systems biology. With his collaborators he has pioneered the use of tools and concepts from computational algebra to model biological systems.Bernd SturmfelsBERND STURMFELS is Professor of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at UC Berkeley. A leading experimentalist among mathematicians, he has authored ten books and over 180 articles, in the areas of combinatorics, algebraic geometry, symbolic computation and their applications. Sturmfels currently works on algebraic methods in statistics, optimization and computational biology. His honors include the MAA's Lester R. Ford Award and designation as a George Polya Lecturer.
