Abstract

The layout of chemical plant is based upon the process flow sheet and takes the form of arranging vessels on a site or in a building, and routing pipes or conveyors between vessels according to the specifications of the process flow sheet. By defining an objective function as costs due to building or site plus piping, and calculating the objective function for each specified arrangement, the techniques of mathematical nonlinear programming may be used to find the most economic plant layout. The method of plant layout has to ensure that adequate access to process vessels is provided for operation, maintenance and construction, and these requirements are met by defining modular volumes that contain the process vessels and space required for access. The dimensions of each module and the coordinates of each pipe nozzle within each module are defined at the outset, and module positions are adjusted as the computation proceeds. At the end of the optimization, the dimensions of the layout are contained in a databank, and may then be used in computer-aided drafting procedures. The layout of a batch polyester plant by these methods is described.
