Abstract

The paper describes the work in the design drawing offices and production departments of Ferranti Ltd, Edinburgh on the automatic preparation of data for production and streamlining the flow of data between the two areas. One aim has been to produce designs which specify parts suitable for economic production on numerically controlled machines. Another aim has been to combine drafting, production planning and n.c. part-programming at as early a stage in design as possible to reduce duplication and save effort. The resultant information is produced in a form which is suitable for computer processing. A computer-produced information explosion is obtained, the output being in the form of detail drawings, scale master drawings, lists and control tapes of many tapes. An n.c. based manufacturing cell has been established, and subsequently, the development of computer assisted inspection. Achievements so far and probable future developments are discussed.
