Abstract

There are various different ways of analysing and evaluating the availability of chemical plants. In this paper, after a short discussion, the methodology created by Corporate Laboratory of ICI for this analysis is applied. Some possibilities of the blocking technique are assessed, while using a highly interactive approach. This program (called BLOCK) is easy to use and flexible enough for application to the above-mentioned problem. This paper deals with the adequacy of the technique and the significance of the obtained results for industrial problems. Some experience of availability analysis (i.e. the modification of a flowsheet, variations of spares and the capacity of tanks) for steam reformer plants are listed, together with some ideas for the use of an availability program.
