Abstract

This chapter focuses on computational strategies in the combined discrete/finite element methodology that is essential to the successful simulation of practical problems involving multi-fracture and discrete phenomena. Issues that are considered include detection procedures for monitoring contact between large numbers of discrete elements and any continuum regions present, representation of interaction laws for contacting elements, fracture criteria and propagation mechanisms within both the finite and discrete elements, mesh adaptivity procedures for discretization and fracture phenomena, and parallel implementation. The applicability of the methodology developed is explained through selected practical examples and the benefits of parallel processing techniques for the solution of industrial scale problems are demonstrated.
