Abstract

Translation process research is an active interdisciplinary research area withintranslation studies attracting translation scholars, computer scientists and themachine learning community alike. Novel data acquisition methods have beendeveloped in recent years leading to large sets of translation process data thatis analysed qualitatively as well as quantitatively. What has been anticipatedalready decades ago, today, computational linguistics methods are instrumentalfor translation process research and translation studies to enhance machinetranslation technologies by analysing real human behaviour. Empirical translationprocess research thus becomes more formalized and interconnected withcomputational linguistics methods and may potentially give answers to questionsraised long time ago. In this chapter we trace the development of computationallinguistics and translation process research from this angle and point todevelopments that we think will further drive this vibrant field of research.
