Abstract

The calculation model of enclosed helical gear is established to investigate the effect of baffle arrangements and clearances on windage loss, and the multivariate interactions of the baffle features for windage loss are examined. The results elucidate that the outlet and bilateral baffle configurations have roughly equal contributions on reducing windage loss, while the inlet baffle contributes less. The joint effect of the outlet and radial clearance was largely higher than that of each alone on windage loss; while for the outlet and inlet clearance, the individual effects were significantly stronger. These results indicate that the windage loss and flow mechanism of gear channel are mainly dominated by axial outlet baffle and radial baffle, rather than by axial inlet baffle.
