Abstract

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a mathematically based method of simulating fluid. Tank testing and full-scale reconstructions of archaeological boat finds are generally prohibitively expensive for archaeological projects. The aim of this study is to run a hypothetical model of Barcode 02 through a CFD simulation and to find out how useful and usable it could be for maritime archaeologists. CFD is time consuming and requires many iterations to draw concrete conclusions on the sailing ability of a boat model. Experience with nautical engineering, applied mathematics or physics would be an advantage in interpreting the results.
