Abstract

Biopharmaceutical cell culture processes require a high understanding of the dynamics of the cultivated cells. In this chapter, novel model-assisted methods are reviewed for the development and scale-up of process and feeding strategies. In the beginning, the need for efficient and productive bioprocesses is highlighted, followed by a short history of CHO cells. Then, current efforts in model-assisted Design of Experiments are shown to enable an accelerated bioprocess design and optimization. Second, the computational evaluation of process strategies during scale-up from cultures in microbioreactors to pilot scale is reviewed. In the end, further challenges towards the Digital Twin concept are discussed.
