Abstract

Protection of transformers and other system equipments against transient over voltages resulting from lightning or other causes is an important consideration in power system design. For insulation co-ordination in transmission lines and substation equipments, it is necessary to accurately predict the lightning surge over voltage that occur in power systems. In this paper we determine the lightning over voltage at various points of GIS (Gas Insulated Substation) with and without surge arrester. EMTP (ELECTRO MAGNETIC TRANSIENT PROGRAM) is used for simulating the over voltages at various points of GIS. This paper also provide the EMTP MODELING of transmission lines, insulators, cable, substation-bus, transformer, PT, CT, Circuit breaker, isolators, etc. Here single phase representation of GIS is considered and over voltage is simulated for 230 KV system.
