Abstract
There is no direct solar irradiance in shadow area. The terrain information of shadow area is often neglected in preceding researches for that hillshade values are calculated only by direct solar irradiance. In this paper, a model simulating hillshade values in natural environment based on the total irradiance which consists of direct solar irradiance and diffuse sky irradiance are developed. According to isotropic model of diffuse sky radiation, the author provides a formula to calculate the illumination of diffuse sky irradiance. The relative hillshade values can be calculated according to solar position and the ratio of diffuse irradiance to total irradiance on horizontal surface. This research shows the new method is more suitable to express topographic information in complex terrain areas.
