Abstract

Three-dimensional techniques are often required to compute fields and inductances in devices in which leakage flux plays an important role. One such example is the interphase transformer shown in Fig. 1. There are two modes of operation. For currents in the flux additive sense, the flux crosses the small gap and the inductance is relatively high. For currents in the flux opposing sense, the flux is forced into the leakage paths and the inductance is much lower. The device is thus used as a filter, blocking harmonics which are ‘‘in phase’’ and allowing harmonics which are ‘‘out of phase’’ to pass. The inductance computations were done with the PHI3D boundary-element package. The method of computing the fields and inductance is discussed in the paper along with comparison with test results.
