Abstract

The procedure for computing all 21 independent elastic parameters of a homogenous generally anisotropic medium from the travel times of quasi-compressional waves is suggested. The method is based on the non-linear least-squares inversion, in which the theoretical formula for direct computation relates the elastic parameters and ray velocities of three body waves propagating in the homogeneous anisotropic medium. The estimates for errors are also given. The procedure is tested on synthetic and real data, and the results show that the procedure works sufficiently well if data for the solution of this inverse problem are directionally well distributed.
