Abstract

The main computational devices in use in schools in Europe during the nineteenth century were the logarithmic tables and the slide rule. This subject has not been researched upon before, and therefore, this chapter presents a first tentative to assess the development. The investigation has focussed on a number of European states, namely England, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.
