Abstract

A novel facility for producing photons of continuously variable energy from 3.0 MeV to 8.0 MeV has been constructed at the Ames Laboratory Research Reactor. Gamma rays produced by neutron capture in the reactor are Compton scattered from a curved aluminum plate whose curvature is easily varied for different scattering configurations. This facility has been used for photofission yield measurements and preliminary results of the relative photofission cross section from 5.0 MeV to 8.0 MeV are presented for 238U.
