Abstract

A new direct method for sampling from the Klein-Nishina formula in the solution of photon transport problems by Monte Carlo method is presented. A functional description of the Compton-sampling surface is derived. This provides the proper selection of scattering angle directly as a function of initial photon energy and computer-generated random number. The present formulation is valid for scattering of unpolarized gamma radiation from a free electron in the energy range 0.1–100 MeV.
