Abstract

Abstract The design and construction of a gas Cerenkov-counter of one m 2 cross-sectional area and operating at pressure of up to 8 bar is described. The light collection is effected by multiple reflection on diffusely reflecting surfaces. Measurements of the detection efficiency show the counter to be 98% efficient for pions of 3.5 GeV/ c . The results obtained indicate that the construction of considerably larger detectors of this kind can be envisaged.
