Abstract
Kawasaki disease (KD) is considered an important cause of acquired cardiovascular disease (CVD) in children. The early use of intravenous gammaglobulin (IVGG) could diminish both the incidence and severity of the coronary involvement (CI). We conducted a retrospective study of 60 patients who presented with KD between january 1987 and may 1999 with the objective of describing the CVD in our centre. 23 patients (38%) developed CVD. Of these 12 (20%) had CI (5 ectasia and 7 coronary aneurysms), pericarditis 15%, myocarditis 11.6% valvular involvement 1.6%, arrhytmia 3.3% and 1 myocardial infarction. There were no deaths. 43 out of 60 patients (71.6%) were treated with IVGG at a mean of 7.6 days. Of these 11 (25.5%) developed CI. 75% of the CI recovered spontaneously. In our study it is noticeable the high percentage of CI inspite of adequate treatment, but with a favourable evolution. Long term perspective studies are needed in order to evaluate the real CI due to childhood KD in adults.
