Abstract

The present study investigates the compressive deformation behaviour of aluminium matrix syntactic foam. Thecenosphere hollow filler was incorporated into the aluminium matrix to fabricate the syntactic foam using stir casting technique. A compressive test was conducted on the syntactic foam to evaluate their mechanical properties, and the results were compared with the finite element ABAQUS explicit simulation software. The plateau strength and energy absorption capacities of the experimental and numerical results show a deviation of 1.76 and 7.13% respectively. The numerical results are good, in agreement with the obtained experimental results, and beneficial in understanding the compressive behaviour of closed-cell syntactic foam.
