Abstract

A 128-kW diesel tractor was modified and a new fuel additive was used to enable the compression-ignition engine to run on ethanol and/or diesel fuel. The engine was modified by adding a fumigation system for supplying ethanol through the airstream. In the full-ethanol mode, ignition-enhanced ethanol was injected through the primary injection system to provide ignition, while neat ethanol was fumigated to compensate for the smaller heating value of ethanol. The engine produced full power and no smoke while operating on ethanol, but at increased rates of combustion pressure rise.
