Abstract

Nucleus replacement devices are intended to replace or augment the pathologic intervertebral disc, particularly in the early stages of the degenerative cascade. In order to evaluate the clinical viability of these devices, it is necessary to conduct tests simulating potential failure modes in the physiologic setting in addition to bench-top mechanical device testing and traditional in vitro flexibility evaluation.
