Abstract

Problems and solutions presented in this chapter show how to analyze various compressible flows at subsonic, sonic (choked flow), and supersonic Mach numbers, including those with normal and oblique shocks. They include finding the force on an air compressor operating in a constant-area duct, analyzing adiabatic air flow through two convergent nozzles and one divergent nozzle connected to a plenum, analyzing isentropic air flow through a deformable rubber pipe, locating the normal shock in a convergent-divergent nozzle, analyzing a high-pressure inlet bleed heat (IBH) system of a land-based gas turbine for power generation, comparing Prandtl-Meyer equation with the normal shock function, analyzing the Fanno flow through a long pipe, analyzing the normal shock in a convergent-divergent nozzle attached to a Fanno pipe, analyzing a supersonic air flows over a wedge with measured wave angle and pressure ratio, and many others. Detailed discussions of various concepts behind the problems and solutions presented in this chapter may be found in Fluid Mechanics: An Intermediate Approach by Bijay K. Sultanian, published by Taylor & Francis in 2015.
