Abstract

In this research, we propose an integrated compressed sensing Fourier-Transform spectrometers based plasmonic circuitry on vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) platform. We will show that VCSELs can be employed as an on-chip, electrically pumped source or detector of plasmonic signals, when operated in forward bias. To this end, we will experimentally demonstrate surface plasmon polariton excitation, waveguiding, frequency conversion and detection on a VCSEL-based plasmonic platform and use that as the input light source for MZI spectrometer. The proposed slow light enhanced tunable MZI-array is able to achieve sub-nanometer resolution and large free spectral range (FSR) simultaneously, which is a significant advantage compared to other on-chip spectrometers.
