Study Guide and Self-examination Review for Modern Synopsis of Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry, IV, by Harold I. Kaplan and Benjamin J. Sadock, ed 2; 551 pp, with illus, paper, $22.95, Baltimore, Williams & Wilkins, 1985. Since the first edition of the Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry appeared in 1967, subsequent versions of the text have served to reflect the evolution of pyschiatry in further establishing its theoretical and scientific basis. The fourth edition in this series is generally consistent with this tradition, encapsulating the trends and significant advances that have occurred in the field as of mid-1983 to late 1983, when most of the chapters were written or revised. For example, the chapter on affective disorders has been expanded and reorganized and contains new sections on epidemiology, biochemistry, genetics, and pharmacotherapy, which provide comprehensive summaries of the wealth of recent psychiatric research in this area.
