Abstract

ABSTRACT In the present work, a novel purslane (Sesuvium portulacastrum) fiber has been identified and the effect of surface modifications on its physical, mechanical, and thermal properties has been studied. The fiber surface has been treated with different chemicals, such as sodium hydroxide, acrylic acid, maleic anhydride, potassium permanganate, and benzoyl peroxide. The density, water absorption property, mechanical properties, thermogravimetry analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and surface morphology have been thoroughly investigated. It has been observed that acrylic-acid-treated purslane fiber gives better performance in comparison to other treatments with an enhancement of 36.68% of tensile strength as compared to untreated fibers.
