Abstract
The glycosaminoglycans of rabbit renal cortex were isolated, purified and characterized by paper chromatography, cellulose acetate electrophoresis, chemical and analyses, automatic amino acid analysis for amino sugars, testicular hyaluronidase susceptibility, anticoagulant activity, CD and molecular weight distribution. The original crude extract yielded sulfated and non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan fractions in a 3:1 ratio, containing glucosamine in excess over galactosamine. Further fractionation and purification showed 95% of the purified glycosaminoglycans to be contained in the sulfated portion. The major glycosaminoglycans were heparan sulfates, having a large component with a molecular weight of 14000, and dermatan sulfate.
